2. Portfolio

Candidates for the course in Stage and Costume Design should submit a portfolio with approx. 25 specimens of their own artistic work: drawings, prints, paintings, sketchbooks, photographs, videos.*
Applications and portfolios can be brought personally to the Academy building at Güntzstraße 34 in 01307 Dresden from Monday to Friday between 8 am and 6 pm. The Academy will be closed between Christmas and New Year.
If you are applying for more than one course, you must submit a complete set of documents (including portfolio and record of work experience) for every subject.
The works you submit will be considered as part of your artistic aptitude test. It is therefore essential that you observe the above submission date.
Please make sure you label your portfolio and all the works in it clearly with your forename, surname and home address – without additional paperwork!
3. Record of work experience
See Enrolment Regulations (Immatrikulationsordnung) and the Study Regulations (Studienordnung) for Stage and Costume Design.
* You are welcome to provide a CD of your specimen art works and record of work experience in addition. If you do, we will be able to return your portfolio and work report before the end of the month.

Pre-selection

The portfolios received will undergo pre-selection. Applicants selected by the course Admissions Committee will be invited to attend the Academy for an aptitude test spread over several days. If the works you have submitted fail to meet the artistic criteria for admission, you will receive a letter of rejection, and your works will be kept by the Academy until this letter acquires legal effect.* Your works will then be returned to you in the manner you indicated in your application for admission (i.e. personal collection or by post at your expense). The Academy cannot accept liability for returning these works and it will be done at the applicant’s expense (i.e. unfranked, without recorded delivery, without insurance). If the works are to be returned to an address outside Germany, please enclose adequate return postage. We regret that, owing to the large number of applications, we cannot provide you with a written assessment of your works. The Academy’s duty to retain specimens of work is restricted to one month from the date your letter acquires legal effect. The Academy accepts no liability for any documents submitted. Uncollected application documents will be destroyed.

Aptitude test

The aptitude test takes place every year in the months between February and April. The aptitude test consists of:

1. the pre-selection process,
2. a practical component with a variety of artistic exercises, and
    a subject-related interview.
The Admissions Committee for this degree course will select successful candidates on the basis of the aptitude test. You will receive a letter informing you whether or not you have passed the aptitude test, and your works will remain in the Academy until this letter acquires legal effect (one month after notification)*.
We regret that, owing to the large number of applications, we cannot provide you with a written assessment of your works.

Admission to the degree course is governed by the Enrolment Regulations (Immatrikulationsordnung) of the Hochschule für Bildende Künste Dresden.
Annual admissions depend on the number of vacant places.
