International applicants

After an overview of all courses of study offered at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts, we have compiled some useful information for you about studying in Germany.

The Dresden Academy of Fine Arts has two faculties providing the following courses:

  • Faculty I (standard duration 10 semesters, leading to the qualification Diplom)
    Fine Art
  • Faculty II (standard duration 10 semesters, leading to the qualification Diplom)  Conservation – the following specializations are available:
    • Art technology, conservation and restoration of paintings on mobile supports;
    • Art technology, conservation and restoration of wall paintings and polychrome architectural surfaces
    • Art technology, conservation and restoration of polychrome sculptures, panel paintings and retables
    Stage Setting and Costume Design 
    (standard duration 10 semesters, leading to the qualification Diplom)
    University of Applied Sciences course in Set Design (standard duration 8 semesters, leading to the qualification Diplom-Designer (UAS)) – the following specializations are available:
      • Costume Construction
      • Make-up artistry
      • Set painting
      • Theatrical sculpture

    If you want to spend your entire course of study at our Academy, you will need to provide evidence by the date of enrolment that you have German language skills at B2 level (TestDaF, DSH, Goethe). Your grade needs to be at least “GUT”.

    Graduates can choose between the following four-semester postgraduate courses:  

      • Fine Arts (master class)
      • Stage and Costume Design (master class)
      • Art Therapy (advanced degree leading to a Diplom)

      ERASMUS students: The ERASMUS+ programme enables students from other European countries to spend one or two semesters studying at the Academy in Dresden. More details can be found here.
