Preliminary Selection

Submitted portfolios are subjected to a preliminary selection process. Applicants shortlisted by the admission commission are invited to take an aptitude test spread over several days and held at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts.

If your submitted work does not fulfil the artistic criteria set for the respective pathway you will be informed that you have not been selected for further participation in the admission process. As a result of the huge number of applications we receive, we are unfortunately unable to provide a written assessment of your work. Your submitted work will be returned to you in accordance with the preference indicated by you on the “Aptitude test application form” (collection in person or return by post at your own cost). The return of your work by the Academy is at your own risk and cost (postage to be paid by you, package sent unregistered and uninsured). If your work is to be returned to a foreign address you are required to enclose sufficient postage with your application. If you have indicated on the “Aptitude test application form” that you would like your portfolio to be returned to you by post, you should enclose a pre-paid address label from Deutsche Post or another package delivery service with it. Please indicate your address where appropriate and leave the “sender address” section blank.

The Academy is only required to store samples of work for 3 months and accepts no liability for submitted documents. Application documents uncollected at the end of the 3-month period will be destroyed.

Aptitude Test

The aptitude test is held between the months of February and April each year. It comprises:

  1. The preliminary selection process;
  2. An artistic-practical section consisting of various tasks and a subject-oriented discussion with the applicant.

The admission commission for the respective pathway is responsible for deciding which applicants have passed the aptitude test. All participants will be informed in writing of the test results within a period of four weeks after the test. Applicants invited to participate in the aptitude test will have their portfolios returned to them after the end of the test. As a result of the large number of applicants involved, we are unfortunately unable to provide a written assessment of the work submitted.
