Stage and Costume Design

Standard course duration: 5 years

Academic title awarded: Diplom

The course leading to a degree in Stage and Costume Design at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste in Dresden combines a training in the skills of stage design with those of costume design.

The underlying philosophy is to foster an all-round artistic approach and to overcome narrow boundaries between disciplines. Contemporary theatre encourages a shared discovery process when directing a play. This course prepares graduates for the opportunities and challenges of all-embracing authorship.

Students tackle literary and musical works conceptually and creatively. An emphasis is placed on critical exploration of the material. Sharpening a discursive awareness of social issues is crucial. The aim is to define an aesthetic position and to be able to defend it. The course in Dresden maintains close links with theatre practice. Design and implementation projects offer students a chance to test divisions of labour in different ways. An important component of the course consists in transforming a theme into a stage blueprint with ideas for the use of space and character. Models are an essential tool to master. Ideas are also developed and presented in the form of drawings, storyboards, plans, photography and film.

The course is a period of artistic experiment, research and sensitisation to wide-ranging historical and contemporary forms of communication and narrative.
