Standard Course duration: 8 Semesters
Academic Title awarded: Degress (UAS)
The UAS degree course in Set Design offered by the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts is a unique blend of four fields of study: Set Painting, Set Sculpture, Costume Construction and Make-up Artistry. This combination and its integration into an academy of arts structure is unprecedented in Germany, and facilitates the delivery of a multi-disciplinary course of study which reflects the requirements and challenges of modern production forms.
Students who graduate from the course will have gained a practice-oriented education which enables them to work in all areas of the media, including theatre, film, television, show business and the design of trade fairs and exhibitions. The modular four-year degree course imparts knowledge and skills in the fields of design, craftsmanship/technique and theory, and awards successful students the title of graduate designer (UAS) in their particular field.
The UAS degree course in Set Design is run parallel to the degree course in Stage Setting and Costume Design. Originally developed by a specialist college founded in the 1960s, the course is dedicated to giving students a high-quality education in four specific theatre setting professions: Set Painting, Set Sculpture, Costume Construction and Make-up Artistry. Traditionally restricted to the interpretation and realization of artistic designs, these professions have now come to involve a significant level of autonomous creativity. Each pathway is permeated by three key elements: artistic design, craftsmanship/technique and theoretical knowledge. The four-year modular degree course is practice-oriented, and prepares students for the complexities of modern productions in the fields of theatre, film, television, show business and the design of events, exhibitions and trade fairs. This enables graduates from the course to carry out freelance work across a range of sectors.
