The endeavour to design and structure living spaces can be understood as a basic need of man and the true meaning of architecture. Architecture helps in the orientation and differentiation of our environment. Thus the field of activity of architecture ranges from the interiors, buildings, the city to designed landscape. In everyday life however, we experience the ‘built’ environment not only as an object, but also as a catalyst of actions and life processes; its forms constitute and represent reality.
If we continue to view architecture out of interest in the discipline, then the forms of our environment can also be understood as the results of a process, in which architectural action and thought have consolidated and also found a form. As any other design, it originates from varying initial thoughts and their linking to form one idea. It is only when one moves from the idea to the planning and organisation phase of the construction process that increasingly disciplinary knowledge and procedures are applied in architectural practice.
Two event series focussing on ‘Architectural history/architectural theory’ and ‘Interior design’ are dedicated to the different approaches of this understanding of architecture. The fundamental aspects of space, perception and the diverse structures of architectonic forms are presented in lectures and seminars and their analysis or synthesis is tested in the framework of semester-accompanying study assignments. The contents of both series are the subject of general, artistic training; they are offered to students of all disciplines.
