Philosophy/Aesthetics

The area of Philosophy/Aesthetics transmits philosophy in all its historical broadness and plurality of its methodological as well as critical orientations. Classical philosophical positions are discussed, questioned and updated from the perspective of a global critical theory, while contemporary debates are examined in historical depth.

The area aims to familiarise students of all classes with the relevance of philosophy and aesthetics for questions of art and design practice, and above all to provide them with tools for dealing with philosophical thinking independently. Furthermore, philosophical reflection on making is taught in relation to the role of philosophy/aesthetics in the formation of political activity, the organisation of social movements and the understanding of different (medial, scientific) modes of representation. Among others, the teaching offer includes following subject areas: history and theory of aesthetics, post-structuralism and psychoanalysis, materialism, political philosophy and critical theory including feminism and gender studies, theories of decolonisation, critique of political economy, and philosophy of language.
