Profile
For some time now, we have been asking ourselves what kind of theater we want and what space we want to occupy in it. We invite you to reconsider the name of our degree program "Stage and Costume Design". Does this name correspond to the actual profile of our degree program? Do we need a new name, or do we fill the established name with a new meaning?
The focus of the diploma course is on the conceptual development of the visuality and content of theater forms and their practical implementation.
In their entirety, the components of the course are designed to enable students to research new formats and practices. The discursive opening towards social issues plays a decisive role in this. The aim is to develop substantive and aesthetic viewpoints and to exploit the transformative potential of theater as a collective art form.
The course in Dresden is characterized by its proximity to theater practice. It offers the opportunity to work through design and realization within the framework of interdisciplinary projects. Changing authorships are encouraged. In addition to the wide range of courses on offer, students have access to studios, workshops, a library, a laboratory theater and the student-run Café OHA.
Another part of the course is the translation of themes and texts into scenic spatial and character concepts. The tools for this are model making, sketches, technical drawings, photographs, videos, simulations and performative exercises.
The course is a time for artistic experimentation and research.
It offers the freedom to question one's own theater work again and again and to apply the knowledge gained in practice.
Undergraduate:
In the two-semester basic course, insights into the diversity of the theater landscape and the necessary skills are conveyed. The students come into contact with different teachers and take part in individual events, lectures, workshops and excursions. Discursive formats enable intensive reflection on the job profile, while practical workshops are used to encourage people to start working individually.
Seminars and lectures in technical and theoretical subjects complement the basic studies.
Main Study:
From the 3rd semester onwards, students learn the way to independent design work in the field of stage and costume design. For this purpose, changing topics are offered and supported by the teaching professors every semester, these include design projects over the course of the entire semester or several short projects. The individual steps correspond to a practice-oriented approach. The artistic activities in this part of the course are flanked by theoretical courses:
Theater studies, production dramaturgy, philosophy and art history, architecture and costume theory. The teaching program is supplemented by presentations and guest lectures by invited scientists and artists. The technically excellently equipped university laboratory theater offers not only the opportunity to work together but also the opportunity to carry out your own projects. The presentation and discussion of the work created takes place in the regularly held open studios and is part of the curriculum. The main course is open to qualified career changers from other universities and related fields of study.
Diploma:
The course concludes in the fifth year after the two-semester diploma phase with two practical projects in which design concepts for a fictional or practical staging of works of music, spoken or dance theater or media-related projects are developed. In addition, there is a written diploma thesis on a theater-scientific topic, which either arises from an intensive analytical study of the practical work or is freely chosen. The diploma is presented to the public.
Master's Degree:
After successful completion with a diploma, a 4-semester master student course is possible. Applicants who are suitably qualified are encouraged to apply.
