Is there (mental) beauty? Beauty and the arts in the Contemporary Philosophy

Prof. Dr. Constanze Peres

Lecture-Course in English
LOCATION: Güntzstraße 34, room 142 (Dürerstraße, near the rooms of costume design)
TIME: Monday 15.30 - 17.45
BEGINNING: 11. 04. 2022, 15.30

Is beauty still a main category of Aesthetics, especially of art? Is it an incidental (extrinsic) or an integral (internal/ intrinsic) factor of art works? If the latter is the case: what does the beauty of artworks consist of in today's no-longer-beautiful arts in which dissonance and disharmony are important components? Is it a phenomenological beauty, i.e. is it sensuously perceivable and does it give pleasure and joy? Or is it perhaps a mental beauty which defines the special beauty of artworks similar to the merely intelligible mathematical beauty? Those and other questions will be discussed in our lecture course during the summer semester in the discussion of English philosophical texts of the present time.

Concerning modules and ECTS credits see the overview above. In the lecture course one can obtain two ETCS by regular and active participation.
