Memory#3 Memory and Trauma

Online Lecture with psychologist and therapist Maria-Evangelia Antoniadou on June 17 at 5 p.m. via Zoom.

+++ Lecture in English +++

In this presentation we will talk about memory and the psychological aspects of a traumatic event and specify the terminology used for memory - working memory, short-term memory, long-term memory, etc. It is well known that when a person experiences a traumatic event, their memory can be affected in many ways. The trauma may affect memory for that event, memory for previous or subsequent events, or thoughts in general. The area most commonly affected by psychological trauma is long-term memory (missing memories, changes in memory, enhanced memories).

Our main goal is to discuss the psychological aspects of trauma related to repressed memory or recall, intrusive thoughts and emotions. At the end of the lecture we will mention Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, which is a psychological disorder caused by experiencing a terrible event or ordeal with the occurrence or threat of physical harm, or where a person learns that these terrible events happened to a close family member or someone they care about. It is one of the most severe and well-known of the different types of psychological trauma.
