Most of us are constantly confronted with paper: newspapers, bills, official forms, spreadsheets, postcards, shopping bags, packaging paper, books, booklets, advertising flyers, and even toilet paper. Although paper has been increasingly replaced by digital alternatives since the advent of the digital revolution, it remains an ever-present material in our lives. Importantly, paper also serves as a medium for documenting and communicating ideas, thoughts, fantasies, and observations. This role of paper is especially significant in the realm of art, particularly within the visual arts. As a museum, the Kupferstich-Kabinett Dresden is focussed on works of art on paper.
For this exhibition project, the dual existence of paper – the use of paper in art and its role in everyday life – is central. We invite you to explore how these two spheres of paper's usage can interrelate.
If you are interested in participating in this project, we kindly ask you to submit your project applications. A selection of projects will be displayed from Sunday, May 3rd 2026 at the Josef-Hegenbarth-Archive.
The exhibition project “Papiere, Papiere” is part of the exhibition series “AKZENT – Mind the Gap!” taking place at the Kupferstich-Kabinett Dresden since 2021 in cooperation with Hochschule für Bildende Künste Dresden (HfBK) (for more information please see kupferstich-kabinett.skd.museum/ausstellungen/akzent-mind-the-gap/). The present project has been developed and organized in collaboration with the Workshops for Book and Paper at the HfBK Dresden (directed by Christiane Oertel). The Hegenbarth-Archive is the former atelier and residence of the Dresden illustrator and draftsman Josef Hegenbarth (1884—1962). It is located in Dresden-Loschwitz and has been part of the Kupferstich-Kabinett since 1988.
