Photography Lecture 2 | Available Light-Portrait

Online Lecture with Arina Essipowitsch & Dominique Hille

06/08 11-12:30 CET via Zoom

Registration: eu4art@hfbk-dresden.de

Arina Essipowitsch and Dominique Hille, each pursuing an independent artist career, recurringly collaborate as "essipowitsch / hille" to experiment with analogue photography and merge classical manual techniques with concepts of installation and multimedia art. Both artists exhibit internationally (Arina Essipowitsch is currently represented by Manifesta 2020 in Marseille). Together they have been awarded the German Photo Book Prize (Silver).

Connected by their intense studies of traditional photography, essipowitsch / hille explore innovative ways of visualising their images, which is often a combination of portraiture and fairy tale.

"We don't see narration in or through pictures in a linear way, which is why the installations we make play with flashbacks, symbolic images and misfitted images to create a polyphonic narration with different starting points."

In this online lecture, essipowitsch / hille will take the audience to the groundwork of their artistic practice, including handling exposure settings or the features of medium format cameras. Beginners will get an idea of what it means to create pictures with light, while practicing photographers will gain insight into their unique working process and staging of images.

A filmed tutorial will give participants a firsthand experience of how to deal with shooting outdoors and decision-making, reading the available light as well as their surroundings. Both artists will be present at the lecture to explain and comment on the shown material.
