Photography Lecture 3 | In the streets

Online lecture with Torsten Schumann

10/09 11-12:30 CET via Zoom

Registration: eu4art@hfbk-dresden.de

Torsten Schumann is a Berlin-based photographer currently living in China. The central aspect of his artistic practice involves everyday situations and objects encountered in urban space. The artist engages with his own fascination and puzzlement resulting from close observation of detail. Functionality and its appearance enter into an aesthetic narration in Schumann's photographs. His unbiased curiosity investigates the question: Why and to what purpose are these things created?

In Schumann's own words: “Photography helps me question the ordinary. The more I do this, the more I see the world as an enigma.”

Schumann's work has been exhibited in international group shows and photo festivals as well as in various galleries. His work has won multiple prizes, including the Arte Laguna Prize, PDN Photo Annual Award and the OPUS Magazine Photo Prize. In his lecture, Schumann will present selected works and discuss his personal approach to street photography in addition to the importance he attaches to coincidence and intuition. He will explain how he photographs, edits and how his subjects develop. The lecture will be followed by questions from participants and an open discussion with the artist.
