The bookbinding courses explore the book as a medium that embodies content, dimensions, materials, and processes. Students learn traditional and experimental bookbinding techniques as well as the science of materials.
The paper-making course focuses on teaching the basics of traditional paper production and working with paper pulp—including colored pulp—using various European and Asian fibers, as well as recycling textiles made from natural fibers.
The course offerings are supplemented by current special events.
The workshop management is happy to assist with any project ideas or related questions by appointment.

Book Workshop
Introductory Course in Bookbinding
This workshop focuses on teaching the basics of materials and various bookbinding techniques.

Bookbinding (Advanced)
This course focuses on teaching the basics of constructing various presentation and storage forms, such as cassettes, boxes, and slipcases. Participation requires completion of a basic bookbinding course. 6 participants per session

Paper as a Material
In this workshop, paper as a material will be explored in a wide variety of contexts, and a diverse range of presentation forms will be tested. We are planning a semester-long, open-format program combining theory and practice in cooperation with various colleagues from the HfBK and the SKD (including the Department for Exhibition Design, Typography Workshop, Kupferstichkabinett, Volkskunstmuseum, etc.). Key topics: paper as an artistic medium, paper in an exhibition context, paper in museum spaces, etc.
