Profile

Scenic art/scenic painting is a field of applied painting that has its origins in the stage decoration of antique theatre. In addition to backcloth painting, it is also applied in almost all coloured and structural surface designs when designing interior and exterior areas for events, films and exhibitions.

This range is captured in the course: it teaches confident handling of different design techniques and their effects in specific spatial and light situations based on comprehensive graphic, pictorial and sculptural basics. A combination of practice and theory makes it possible to break down the underlying text and image material and to teach perception and the ability for precise communication so as to develop an appropriate high-quality result.

The academy has its own well-equipped laboratory theatre, where students can test their ideas through projects in collaboration with other specialisations and study programmes offered by the academy as well as in cooperation with other national and international universities, theatres and museums.

Scenic painting requires increasingly flexible, autonomous and process-oriented concepts and methods for event design, which may include design work. Scenic painters are part of an overall design in which communicative competence as well as team and planning skills are needed.
