Profile
The aim of artistic teaching in Theatre Sculpture is to qualify gifted and motivated students to become creative and technologically superior sculptors by means of a primarily practical contemporary teaching programme in classical sculpting disciplines such as figure, portrait, relief and animal sculpture. Here, the development of individual talent is considered just as much as the extensive demands of the constantly evolving occupational profile.
Practice-related assignments and projects complement study work in the studio and create stimulating connections with other arts, divisions of theatre or related sciences.
HOPE-Gala 2023 & Theater Plastics
The objective of practical work in the field of theatre sculpture is achieved through participation in numerous projects both inside and outside the HfBK Dresden. Our existing cooperation partners include theatres such as the Sächsische Staatsoper Dresden (Saxon State Opera Dresden), Theater Plauen/Zwickau, the Städtische Theater Chemnitz (Municipal Theatres Chemnitz) or the Staatsoperette Dresden, as well as museums such as the Ozeaneum Stralsund, the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden and the Naturkundemuseum (Museum of Natural History) in Görlitz. One of our long-term partners is Zoo Dresden, where selected animal sculptures made by our students permanently delight zoo visitors. The Theatre Sculpture field of study is also involved in the Dresden HOPE Gala, which is a fund-raising event for South Africa. Costume sculptures of several large African animals have been created for this. Every year, first-year students thematically design a float for the Elbhangfest in Dresden.
When it comes to exchange programmes with other universities, the cooperation with TU Dresden should be mentioned in addition to the annual participation in productions at the Hochschule für Musik “Carl Maria von Weber”. At TU Dresden, we have designed portraits of important philosophers for permanent exhibition in the areas where Political Science and Philosophy classes are conducted.
We also support cultural activities, productions, exhibitions and art festivals, irrespective of their financial budgets, by lending research projects from our collection, for example for the Semper Opera Ball in Dresden, the Dresden Schlössernacht (Night of Palaces), the Theatre Summer in Rheinsberg, the theatre in Göttingen and many associations, initiatives and individuals.
Every year, our students also participate in wooden sculpture symposiums at Hiddensee and the cultural summer in Unaryd (Sweden).
