Julia Oschatz lives as a freelance visual artist in Berlin and Sandau an der Elbe.
In addition to numerous exhibitions of her videos, drawings, paintings and installations, for example at the Stadt Galerie Nordhorn; the Kupferstichkabinett, Berlin; the Hamburger Kunsthalle and the Galerie Mikael Andersen, Copenhagen, she also works as a stage designer. In the critics' survey of the magazine "Theater heute", she was voted stage designer of the year in 2020 for Hamlet at the Gorki Theatre in Berlin.
Julia Oschatz combines different media in her work in an unusual way. All her works are united by a chromatic colouring that is largely limited to the light-shadow scale of black, modulated grey, and white. Drawings play a double role here. As a laboratory of ideas for her questions, they retain their own value of concetto-like condensation. At the same time, they become an integral part of installations, programmatic in their thematic ramifications and visual in their hues. With their analogue headgears, Julia Oschatz's drawings hit a nerve point of human civilisation. With absurd, also tenderly melancholic comedy, they rather question the split between mind and body, since our 'head births' have their origin not only in an extension of our bodily tools, but, going back further, in a dramatic process of the replacement of the monopoly of our near senses by the so-called far senses, traumatic when the latter become 'control senses out of control'.

Under the working title "Echo Chambers", an exhibition is being created that addresses, among other things, the influence of devices, machines and tools on people and their environment. The starting point for the development of the work is an extensive image archive of tools. One's own person is to be confronted with a tool, thing, object in order to create a dialogue, a change in the way of acting or seeing.
