We are delighted that you are interested in studying at the Dresden University of Fine Arts. On this page you will find all the important information about the application process at the HfBK Dresden.

 




Application deadline

The application documents and the application portfolio with internship report must be submitted during the application period from 1st of December to 31st of January.

 


Application documents

The application for admission is to be submitted electronically to the HfBK Dresden by means of the electronically completed application form in the ► application portal of the HfBK Dresden before the respective deadline.

The application for admission must be accompanied by (upload in the application portal):

  1. a curriculum vitae in table form with detailed information on the educational path to date,
  2. copies of certificates of higher education entrance qualification* or copies of certificates or proof of admission in accordance with § 2 Para. 3 to 6 of the matriculation regulations
  3. Proof of practical training or work experience (proof of internship periods and work experience, no contracts)
  4. Internship report: Report on the part of the internship that has already been completed. The report must contain a reflective description of your own activities during the internship of 5 to 10 pages.
  5. Proof of previous periods of study and academic or examination achievements

*In lieu of proof of higher education entrance qualification, an interim report or a half-year information sheet may be submitted for application.

Please note:
The electronically submitted application documents and original documents, e.g. certified copy of the higher education entrance qualification, proof of language proficiency in the case of international applicants, must be submitted ►by post in the case of admission.


Portfolio

The portfolio of work samples for the Art Technology, Conservation and Restoration of Art and Cultural Assets degree program should contain

  •     contain 15 of your own artistic works (freehand drawings, factual drawings, color studies, art-technical studies)
  •     the portfolio must be submitted in analog form (no rolls!) ► by post or in person
  •     a complete list of the work samples submitted, stating the dimensions and materials used, must be enclosed
  •     a signed declaration that the artworks were produced by the artists themselves must be enclosed

Submission as a digital portfolio is made via the ► application portal (upload):

  • the digital portfolio must contain all work samples from the original analog portfolio!
  • digital images of the artistic works in a merged PDF file with a total size of no more than 30 megabytes

The portfolio with the original artistic work samples must be submitted for the aptitude test interview.

The report on the part of the preparatory internship already completed must be attached to the application in accordance with § 2 of the study regulations of the degree program. The content of the report is a reflective description of one's own activities during the internship of 5 to 10 pages.


Information on the Preliminary Internship

The ten-month preparatory internship must be completed full-time. It is recommended to complete the internship in a maximum of 2 phases or at 2 internship locations. However, one phase must last at least 3 months.

The aim of the preparatory internship is to become familiar with the special requirements of the restoration profession and to learn about the ethical and methodological principles of conservation and restoration of art and cultural assets and how to implement them in practice. It also serves to familiarize students with the basics of conservation and restoration practice in the restoration studio.

Recommended content of the preparatory internship:

  •     case-related familiarization with restoration materials, tools and equipment
  •     case-related familiarization with basic techniques and procedures for the examination, conservation, restoration and documentation of art and cultural assets
  •     Care and maintenance of the workplace
  •     familiarization with aspects of preventive conservation

The ten-month pre-study internship must be completed at the time of enrolment.

Preselection

In the pre-selection, the submitted artistic works and the report on the preparatory internship will be assessed on the basis of the following individual achievements:

1. Portfolio

    a) artistic sensitivity
    b) manual dexterity
    c) mastery of the technical fundamentals of artistic design

2. Internship report

    a) Reflective description of own activities during the internship
    b) Documentation of the conservation and restoration work carried out
    c) Aspects of the art historical classification
    d) Aspects of the technical structure Description of damage patterns
    e) Evidence of engagement with the professional principles applicable to the execution of the work
    f) Recording the meaning and purpose of the work carried out

The individual performances are graded by at least two examiners. All individual assessments are given a single weighting when calculating the overall grade.

Those who have achieved at least a grade of 4.0 in each individual assessment and an average grade of at least 3.5 have passed the preselection.


Aptitude test

Participation in the aptitude test requires passing the pre-selection.

The aptitude test consists of the following individual examinations:

  •     Test in the field of art and cultural history
  •     Test in the field of natural sciences
  •     Test in the field of conservation of art and cultural assets
  •     Picture description
  •     Colored factual drawing based on a model
  •     Test of manual dexterity
  •     Test of color integration ability
  •     Final interview

The assessment of the portfolio and the internship report is included in the assessment of the aptitude test.
The aptitude test can be repeated once.

The aptitude test consists of the following examinations:

  •     Test in the field of art and cultural history (written, 45 minutes, weighted once),
  •     Test in the field of natural sciences (written, 45 minutes, weighted once),
  •     Test in the field of conservation of art and cultural assets (written, 45 minutes, weighted 1-subject)
  •     Picture description (written, 45 minutes, weighting 1),
  •     colored factual drawing based on a model (practical, 120 minutes, weighted 1-fold),
  •     Test of manual dexterity (practical, 120 minutes, weighting 1),
  •     Test of color integration skills (practical, 120 minutes, weighting 1),
  •     Final interview (oral, 20 minutes, weighting 4-fold).

In order to pass the aptitude test, the applicant must demonstrate a high level of sensitivity and aptitude for restoration, strong manual skills, a talent for recognizing technical contexts and phenomena and an above-average general education in the field of art and cultural history and in the natural sciences. Anyone who has achieved an overall grade of at least 3.0 has passed the aptitude test. Only two partial grades may be lower than 4.0.

Dates of the aptitude test


Admission

Admission to studies is governed by the enrolment regulations of the Dresden University of Fine Arts. After passing the aptitude test, applicants receive admission to the Dresden University of Fine Arts. The result of the aptitude test is valid for enrolment in the winter semester following the aptitude test.

The university's performance assessment (pre-selection and aptitude test) can be repeated once.

Admission to the Dresden University of Fine Arts is only possible in the winter semester. Annual admission is determined by the number of places available.


Acceptance of the offer of admission and enrollment

Have you been admitted to the program? Congratulations!

In order to enrol successfully, you must first accept the place. To do this, log in to the ► application portal with your access data and go to your application. There you will now find the "Accept place" button.

If you are not (yet) able to start your studies, you can also reject your place here.

Once you have accepted the place, you can enrol online at the start of the enrolment period. You will be asked for further information relevant to enrolment, such as health insurance details, and you can upload your passport photo for your student ID. Finally, you will receive information about the semester fee to be paid and can print out the enrollment application.

For enrollment, the documents submitted digitally so far and, if necessary, further proof must be submitted by post together with the signed enrollment application!
