Space for art and children

Considering the rising rents, it has become difficult to find an affordable, centrally located studio space in addition to your own living space. Artists with children are also dependent on good access to kindergartens or schools in order to pursue their work. A studio house with a childcare facility and an attached exhibition space makes it possible to reconcile family life and artistic practice. Proximity to the local gallery and art scene also promotes creative exchange.

The Dresden off-scene is booming. In addition to established galleries and art houses, more and more independent projects are emerging that offer a wide variety of non-mainstream artistic exhibits. But what is still lacking is a dialogue platform on which artists and curators receive constructive criticism and appreciation of their work. A place for exchange and self-determined publicity. It's time for a blog for young art critics!

The desire to engage with various forms of performative art and the lack of an an appropriate chair led to the founding of the student-run Freien Performance Praxis. Collectively, a flexible range of courses is to be developed that leaves plenty of room for participation and discourse between theory and practice. An experiment with the potential to rediscover the university as an open space.

Art students Philipp Raphael Putzer and Rasmus Roos Lindquist have put in a lot of effort into their 100 square metre space and now, many exhibitions later, have become an integral part of the Dresden off-scene. Their programme includes young contemporary art, particularly exhibits of international artists and curators. With the Schimmel Projects Art Centre Dresden, they intend to build a cross-border network which also benefits the local art scene.

One band uses synergies from three universities

What happens when four young students from the HfM Dresden decide to form a rock band? A bizarre world of artful banging. Musically: a wild mix of hip hop and rock. Aesthetically: a visual firework. To shoot their new music video “Für Elise”, the four musicians called in reinforcement from the Palucca University of Dance Dresden and the HfBK Dresden.

Art and theatre are stages of great egos and ancient hierarchical structures, but also laboratories of socio-political scene changes. After several cooperatively developed plays, performances and installations, five students of stage and costume design at the HfBK Dresden will jointly pose the question of a future in the collective. Their theoretical and practical insights into the concept of the collective will be published in a book, which in turn will serve as a basis for practical implementation.

Many refugees who have reached Europe in recent years are still struggling with the psycho-social consequences of their traumatic experiences. Children in particular suffer from their experiences and the strange life situation in Germany, where they are often confronted with rejection and the resulting isolation. This is where Yvonne Engelhardt comes in with the art therapy programme of her inter-cultural girls' club. Girls with and without refugee experience or migrant background can engage with each other artistically and thus enter into unbiased contact and exchange.

“I’ll be nowhere and everywhere, behind the blue sea.” – music is a universal language. Judith Beckedorf and her guitar speak it fluently. After spending a year in Nashville, Tennessee, and meeting many musicians, she is now back in Dresden with many new songs. The recordings for her next album are under way and a music video is being produced for the title song “Don’t Waste Your Time” in collaboration with students and alumni of the HfBK Dresden.

Setting lyrics to music is singer Christa Abels’ passion. After starting out solo, she has now founded an ensemble with the three musicians Franziska Klesen, Maria Kaiser and Rebecca Fröhlich. They arrange texts by Paul Celan, Ingeborg Bachmann and other poets such that they turn into chimaeras, i.e., theatre plays for the ears. They are now planning video and photo recordings.

Guitarist Armin Kulla currently lives and works in Jerusalem and Bethlehem owing to a teaching assignment at the Edward Said National Conservatory of Music. The light, acoustic sound of his guitar is a musical melting pot, a play with tradition and modernity from west to east. Together with artist Nora Mesaros from the HfBK Dresden, Armin Kulla wants to fulfil a long-cherished wish of creating a duet of music and art in the form of a music video.
