Application formalities for Master Class programme

We are delighted that you are interested in studying at the Dresden University of Fine Arts. On this page you will find all the important information about the application procedure for the master class program in Fine Arts, Stage and Costume Design and Theatre Design at the HfBK Dresden.

 




Application Deadline

The application documents for the winter term must be submitted/ uploaded to the application portal during the application period from June 1 to July 1 (final deadline).

Please note! For the master class in Fine Arts, applications for the summer term are also accepted. The corresponding deadline begins on November 1 and ends on December 15.


Admission requirements

Master class Fine Arts:

Admission to the program is open to those who

  1. holds a four-and-a-half-year degree (270 ECTS credits) in art from a state or state-recognized university (diploma, consecutive master's degree or equivalent) with a grade of “very good” OR holds a degree with a grade of “very good” from a at least three-year program in the arts at a state or state-recognized university and can demonstrate several years of subsequent artistic practice and exhibition experience, on which the prospective mentor has provided an expert assessment, *
  2. has set out in writing the artistic development projects and artistic works envisaged for the master class program and
  3. has the written consent of a professor from the Fine Arts degree program as a supervising mentor in their master class OR for interdisciplinary projects, the written consent of an artistic professor from the Applied Theatre Studies, Theatre Design or the Department of Stage and Costume Design as the supervising mentor.
  4. For international applicants: Submit a language certificate in German or English demonstrating a B2 level (TestDaF, DSH, Goethe) with a passing grade.

* Applicants whose university degrees do not include a grade, or whose grade is not “very good,” must also submit a portfolio containing at least ten of their own artistic works to demonstrate comparable aptitude for the master class program. The decision regarding comparability is made by the master class examination board based on a statement from the prospective mentor.

Master class Stage and Costume Design:

Admission to the program is open to those who

  1. holds a first professionally qualifying university degree in the same or a related course of study with a grade of at least “good” equivalent to at least 300 credit points (CP) according to the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) or at least nine semesters of standard study time,
  2. has set out in writing the artistic development projects and artistic work envisaged for the master class program,
  3. has the written consent of a professor from the university's Department of Stage and Costume Design for the projects mentioned in number 2 OR for interdisciplinary projects of an artistic professor from the Department of Applied Theatre Studies, the Department of Theatre Design or the Department of Fine Arts as a supervising mentor,
  4. has not previously failed a similar course of study.
  5. For international applicants: Submit a language certificate in German or English demonstrating a B2 level (TestDaF, DSH, Goethe) with a passing grade.

The requirement according to sentence 1 no. 1 is also fulfilled if the applicant has completed several similar or related degree programs with a total of 300 ECTS credits or the equivalent of at least nine successfully completed semesters of standard study time, each with the grade “good”.

Master class Theatre Design:

Admission to the program is open to those who

  1. holds a first professionally qualifying university degree with a grade of “very good” in the same or a related course of study equivalent to at least 240 credit points (CP) according to the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) or at least eight semesters of standard study time,
  2. sets out in writing the artistic development projects and artistic works envisaged for the master class program,
  3. has been accepted for the master class program by the professor of the Department of Theater Design at the university for the projects mentioned in number 2,
  4. has not previously failed a similar course of study.
  5. For international applicants: Submit a language certificate in German or English demonstrating a B2 level (TestDaF, DSH, Goethe) with a passing grade.

The requirement according to sentence 1 no. 1 is also fulfilled if the applicant has completed several similar or related degree programs with a total of at least 240 ECTS credits or at least eight succesfully completed semesters of standard study time, each with the grade "very good".


Application Documents

The application for admission must be submitted electronically to the HfBK Dresden by completing the electronic application form in the ► application portal of the HfBK Dresden before the respective deadline.

The application for admission must be accompanied electronically by

  1. Written consent of a professor from the respective degree program for admission to his/her master class
  2. CV in tabular form with detailed information on the applicant's educational background to date (Stage and Costume Design & Theatre Design: including relevant documentation of previous artistic work)
  3. Proof of the required university degree */**
  4. Proof of further periods of study and study or examination achievements
  5. Presentation of the artistic plans and work envisaged during the master class program
  6. Statement confirming that the applicant has not previously enrolled in a master class program at any other university and has not definitively failed to complete it
  7. Only Stage and Costume Design and Theatre Design: Declaration confirming that the respective master class regulations are recognized,
  8. Only Stage and Costume Design and Theatre Design: Declaration that the regulations of the HfBK Dresden for ensuring good artistic and academic practice are recognized and that their rules will be strictly adhered to,
  9. Only Fine Arts: in the absence of the required degree,…

    - no “very good” degree with the required number of credits (270 ECTS): a portfolio of 10 original artistic works and a expert assessment from the prospective mentor,

    - no degree of the required standard: proof of several years of artistic practice and exhibition experience, as well as an expert assessment from the prospective mentor,

  10. Only international applicants: A language certificate in German or English level B2 with a passing grade (not older than 3 years!)

**Instead of proof of a university degree, proof of having passed or planned to take the final examination can be submitted with the application


Admission

Admission to the program is governed by the matriculation regulations and the study and examination regulations for the respective master class program at the Dresden University of Fine Arts. The respective master class examination board decides on admission to the program. This admission cannot be deferred and therefore always applies to the following semester.

For the master class programs in Stage and Costume Design and Theater Design, admission is only possible in the winter term. The master class program in Fine Arts can be started in either the winter or summer term. Admission is subject to the number of available spots.


Acceptance of the offer of admission and enrollment

Have you been admitted to the program? Congratulations!


In order to enrol successfully, you must first accept the place. To do this, log in to the ► application portal with your access data and go to your application. There you will now find the "Accept place" button.

If you are not able to start your studies, you can also reject your place here.

Once you have accepted the place, you can enrol online at the start of the enrolment period. You will be asked for further information relevant to enrolment, such as health insurance details, and you can upload your passport photo for your student ID. Finally, you will receive information about the semester fee to be paid and can print out the enrollment application.

For enrollment, the documents submitted digitally so far and, if necessary, further proof must be  submitted by post together with the signed enrollment application!

Information on the Saxon "Landesgraduiertenstipendium"

The Saxon State Scholarship is granted by the Free State of Saxony as a non-repayable grant. The Studentenwerk Freiberg issues the grant notification in accordance with the university's decision, subject to available budget funds.
