Application Deadline
For the specialization areas of make-up design, theater sculpture and costume design, the application documents and the application portfolio must be submitted during the application period from 1 November to 15 January (cut-off deadline).
For the specialization in Scenic Painting, the application documents and the application portfolio must be submitted during the application period from 1 January to 15 March (cut-off deadline).
The application for admission is to be submitted electronically to the HfBK Dresden by means of the electronically completed application form in the ► application portal of the HfBK Dresden before the respective deadline.
The application for admission must be accompanied by (upload in the application portal):
- a curriculum vitae in table form with detailed information on the educational path to date,
- copies of certificates of higher education entrance qualification* or copies of certificates or proof of admission in accordance with § 2 Para. 3 to 6 of the matriculation regulations
- Proof of practical training or work experience (proof of internship periods and work experience, no contracts)
- Proof of previous periods of study and academic or examination achievements
- Description of personal development and desire to study
- only applicable for Costume Design: copy of certificate of professional qualification as a ladies' or men's tailor or a comparable professional qualification
*In lieu of proof of higher education entrance qualification, an interim report or a half-year information sheet may be submitted for application.

Please note:
The electronically submitted application documents and original documents, e.g. certified copy of the higher education entrance qualification, proof of language proficiency in the case of international applicants, must be submitted ►by post in the case of admission.
For the Theater Design course, the application portfolio can be submitted either in digital* or analog (no reels!) and digital form.
The portfolio with work samples should contain at least 25 of your own original artistic works (drawings, graphics, paintings, collages, sketchbooks) as well as for
- Scenic painting: photos with dimensions and technique of own creative works
- Theater sculpture: meaningful photos with measurements of the original size and production period (year of creation) of sculptural works
- Costume design: photos of self-made garments or photographic documentation of own design work from professional practice
- Make-up design: if applicable, photographic documentation of own creative work from professional practice.
*Submission as a digital portfolio is made via the ►application portal (upload):
- the digital portfolio must contain all work samples from the original analog portfolio!
- digital images of the artistic works in a merged PDF file with a total size of no more than 30 megabytes
- optional: artistic works in digital form (e.g. video and sound works) with a maximum total size of 50 megabytes
- a complete list of the submitted work samples, each with details of dimensions and materials used, in PDF format
- a signed declaration that the artistic works were produced by the applicant him/herself must be enclosed.
The portfolio with the original artistic work samples must be presented for the aptitude test interview!
A three-month pre-study internship is required in the field of study Scenic Painting. In the fields of study Theater Sculpture, Costume Design and Make-up Design, a five-month pre-study internship is required.
The pre-study internship must be completed in the respective professional field in theater, film, TV and other media productions or production workshops and documented in a suitable form. It is also possible to reduce or waive the duration of the preparatory work placement through subject-specific professional training or qualifications. This is decided by the admissions committee.
The three or five-month pre-study internship must be completed at the time of enrolment.
Confirmation of pre-study internship for the internship position (scenic painting)
A separate pre-selection takes place for each study specialization.
In the pre-selection, the submitted portfolio of artistic works is evaluated. To pass the pre-selection, the applicant must demonstrate
- the quality of their artistic and design skills in the context of the field of study,
- an individual creative talent,
- the quality of previous practical and technological knowledge and skills, and
- the level of motivation and ability to meet the requirements of the degree program
demonstrate his/her aptitude. A candidate has passed the pre-selection if more than half of the examiners have awarded him/her the grade "passed".
A separate aptitude test is held for each study specialization.
The aptitude test consists of
- artistic and sculptural design tasks with a completion time of 2 to 8 hours per task,
- practical design tasks in the respective subject area with a processing time of 2 to 8 hours per task
- as determined by the admissions committee, a written knowledge test on subject-specific and general artistic topics lasting 10 to 45 minutes,
- an aptitude interview (without assessment) lasting 10 to 30 minutes, which relates in particular to the applicant's motivation, the work submitted by him/her and the work completed during the aptitude test.
To pass the aptitude test, the applicant must demonstrate the following
- the quality of their artistic and design skills in the context of the field of study,
- an individual creative talent,
- the quality of previous practical and technological knowledge and skills,
- the quality of previous theoretical knowledge and
- the level of motivation and ability to meet the requirements of the degree program,
demonstrate his/her aptitude. The aptitude test has been passed by anyone who has achieved an average grade of better than 2.7 in the overall assessment of all examination results.
Admission to studies is governed by the enrolment regulations of the Dresden University of Fine Arts. After passing the aptitude test, applicants receive admission to the Dresden University of Fine Arts. The result of the aptitude test is valid for enrolment in the winter semester following the aptitude test.
If the aptitude test is not passed, the applicant may reapply at the next deadline.
Admission to the Dresden University of Fine Arts is only possible in the winter semester. Annual admission is determined by the number of places available.

In order to enrol successfully, you must first accept the place. To do this, log in to the ► application portal with your access data and go to your application. There you will now find the "Accept place" button.
If you are not (yet) able to start your studies, you can also reject your place here.
Once you have accepted the place, you can enrol online at the start of the enrolment period. You will be asked for further information relevant to enrolment, such as health insurance details, and you can upload your passport photo for your student ID. Finally, you will receive information about the semester fee to be paid and can print out the enrollment application.
For enrollment, the documents submitted digitally so far and, if necessary, further proof must be submitted by post together with the signed enrollment application!
