“We call it unheimlich; you call it heimlich.” Gutzkow
The Uncanny is a concept in art describing the eerie and anxious feeling created by the familiar in an unfamiliar context. Being first explored psychologically in the 1906 essay of Ernst Jentsch, On the Psychology of the Uncanny, the concept is probably closest associated with Sigmund Freud through the essay The Uncanny from 1919:
„In general we are reminded that the word heimlich is not unambiguous, but belongs to two sets of ideas, which without being contradictory are yet very different: on the one hand, it means that which is familiar and congenial, and on the other, that which is concealed and kept out of sight. (...)
Thus heimlich is a word the meaning of which develops towards an ambivalence, until it finally coincides with its opposite, unheimlich. Unheimlich is in some way or other a
subspecies of heimlich.“
Currently, the term Uncanny Valley (Unheimliches Tal), is used to describe animations, video games or art works that reproduce reality (humans and places) so close that a feeling of discomfort occurs. Where is the point where seemingly unassuming spaces becomes something new, something else and how can this function as a narrative tool?
